5 Wellbeing Benefits of Cold Water Swimming
Cold water swimming, also known as cold water immersion (CWI), has become increasingly popular in recent years. I know of many friends and relatives who have been practicing this for years, and it has now become part of their weekly ritual to take a plunge into the freezing water.
When practiced over a long period of time, it is believed to promote the body’s natural healing processes, improve mental well-being, and reduce stress levels. Granted, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea (or iced tea, should I say), but I’m a firm believer that for anything deemed to promote mental well-being, we should allow everyone to make their own decisions.
So, let’s look at the Top 5 reported benefits of cold water swimming.
Improved Cardiovascular Circulation
CWI boosts cardiovascular circulation, which is beneficial for a healthy heart and a strong immune system. What happens is that the cold water immediately sends the body into shock, causing the blood vessels to narrow (vasoconstriction) and then expand again when you exit the water. It is believed that this narrowing and expansion of the blood vessels enhances blood circulation.
Improve Natural Immunity
When immersed in freezing cold water, the body tries to heat itself up again, which in turn activates the immune system and releases more white blood cells.
Regular exposure to cold water is thought to stimulate the body’s natural immune system by increasing the production of white blood cells. White blood cells are there to fight viruses, bacteria, and other foreign invaders that attack your body. Hence, CWI is thought to promote the body’s natural defense mechanisms.
Increased Metabolism
During CWI the body must work harder to maintain its core temperature, leading to an increase in metabolic rate and increased energy levels. This has also been known to help with weight management.
Enhanced Mental Wellbeing
“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is the theory that small amounts of stress can be beneficial, making you more mentally resilient in the long term.
CWI is also associated with the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters that can improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety. It is this theory that encourages lots of people to embrace the freezing cold for the ‘greater good.’ I am a massive activist who believes that people should do whatever makes them feel good about themselves.
Pain Relief
Some enthusiasts believe that cold water immersion can help reduce muscle fatigue and inflammation and promote muscle recovery after a workout. The process of vasoconstriction can help reduce inflammation and swelling that can be associated with autoimmune diseases, e.g., rheumatoid arthritis and chronic pain.
Remember that everyone and every body is uniquely different, and hence, before engaging in any new activity like this, it is best to consult with a healthcare professional, especially if you have an underlying health condition. Moreover, due to the risks associated with Cold Water Immersion, never attempt it on your own and always ensure someone else is present.
